Allison Eden of Allison Eden Studios

This week, I am featuring an interview with Allison Eden of Allison Eden Studios. Allison’s New York studio specializes in manufacturing custom glass wall art using intricate and beautiful glass tiles to create elaborate and attractive mosaics.

What led you to start Allison Eden Studios and when did you start Allison Eden Studios?

I started Allison Eden Studios in 1995 right out of Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. I wanted to be a fashion designer, an interior designer, and an artist all rolled-into-one, and I was doing all three until I came upon the medium of stained glass. I loved stained glass because of the colors’ brilliancy, and because I was able to cut shapes and create unique patterns and art out of this material that had not been used for anything but windows in the past. I was able to create glass art that could be used in interior design applications, and to this day, I still add it to the clothing I make as well.

What is your favorite aspect of owning and operating Allison Eden Studios?

My favorite part of owning and operating Allison Eden Studios is that I can make whatever I want and have no channels to go thru to approve my designs or anyone to reign me in. I am constantly working on many collections at once. Since I love what I do, I could create all day and night. I run the business with my husband, Gary, who understands the method to my madness and inspires me every day to push the buttons and to go further with my designs to create a totally unique art.

What have you learned the most from opening and running your business?

What I have learned most from running Allison Eden Studios is that I always need to be moving forward, trying new materials, pushing boundaries and never looking at what others are making. All comes from within - I am very inspired by my surroundings, my family and living in New York City. There is such eye candy in this town that everyday there is a new opportunity and new challenges but, if you love what you do, nothing can get in your way!

What tips and ideas do you have for other’s who would like to create a similar business?

You must follow your heart and love what you do as life is short. You must be innovative and always bringing new ideas to the table. Always work hard and follow your dreams as they aren't coming to find you! Hard work always pays off!

What are your favorite items to craft for your business?

I don't have any favorites in particular. I love creating all types of glass mosaics: each piece is always quite different, and I try to tweak my techniques every time so that nothing stays stagnant. I make everything by hand and use no machinery, so that enables me to really think outside of the box and to figure out new ways to do things so my pieces always have a bit of a new twist. I learn something new each time I create something.

What is at the heart of your business that you want your customers to take home?

Most of all art is meant to give an emotion. My job is to create a piece that brings happiness. I love color and bright, cheerful subjects. My work is so intricate that it leaves a lot of questions as to how certain things are actually made.
