Sindi’s Garam Marsala Casserole
1 pound of grass-fed beef hamburger
1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon of garam marsala,
3 small onions, sliced into half-moon slivers
2 carrots, diced
½ a stick of butter
3 tablespoons of brown sugar
1 cup of basmati rice, rinsed
2 cups of water
1 ½ teaspoons turmeric
1 teaspoon salt
Brown hamburger with onions and 1 tablespoon of garam marsala. Add carrots to beef and onion mixture and sauté until the carrots are soft. Add brown sugar and sauté for 1 more minute. Simultaneously, combine rice with water, turmeric, salt, and 1 teaspoon of garam marsala in a pot and bring to a boil. Let the rice simmer covered for fifteen minutes and then turn off the burner and let the rice sit covered for forty minutes. Combine the rice and beef mixtures in a skillet and sauté with butter until warmed through. Place in a greased casserole dish to serve. Makes 6 servings.
