What led you to become an interior designer?
I became an Interior Designer as a result of a "life-changing" event; I was a Paralegal for 15 years at the same law firm when, unexpectedly, both my bosses took early retirement, and I was let go from the firm. I then made a very quick, impulsive decision to take my life in a different direction, and I signed up at the nearby Interior Designers Institute in Newport Beach, California. I'm proud to say that I earned my AA degree and then started my own company, Bonnie Joy Designs.
What is your favorite aspect of being an interior designer?
My favorite aspect of interior design is the psychological factor. Why do certain people always gravitate toward the same colors? Conversely, why are some clients so afraid to choose a color other than white for their walls? These examples are just some of the fascinating aspects of interior design.
What have you learned the most from your career in interior design?
What I have learned the most in my career is that "change is hard." Of course, that maxim appears all the time in life but its especially true when applied to interior design decisions. Change is hard, but it's good too!
What tips and ideas do you have for other’s who would like to be interior designers?
As to anyone who desires to become an interior designer, the only advice I have is to follow your passion and the expertise will flow.
What are your favorite features of being an interior designer?
My favorite feature of being an interior designer is very simple: I get to shop and be creative and make a living too. It's that simple.
What is at the heart of your career in interior design that you want your clients to take home?
What is at the heart of my career that I want my clients to take home is kind of corny but true: home is where the heart is and that's what I'm all about as a residential interior designer.
