Interview with Interior Designer, Diana Deitrick
What led you to start to become an interior designer?
I was artistic as a child, I loved to build models, draw, take pictures and I would wonder at architecture. In high school I attended an interior design career workshop by FIDM and after it I knew that that was how I wanted to express my creativity. I liked the idea that every project would be different, with different set of challenges, different people, different sites.
What is your favorite aspect of being an interior designer?
The conceptual phase. The part where I get to come up with the ideas, the concept, the theme, or the vibe of the space. I love to go to the site and study it, then visualize the space according to what I see, with its limits and challenges.
What have you learned the most from your career in interior design?
How to listen to the client, the team, the end-user. It is important to understand what the objective and end result needs to be.
What tips and ideas do you have for other’s who would like to be interior designers?
Learn the small details, learn how things work, be resourceful, keep learning and push yourself to create out of your comfort zone, that’s how you learn your style your niche.
What are your favorite features of being an interior designer?
My favorite thing about being an interior designer is being able to help people thrive in their space and meet wonderful clients who become long term friends. In terms of the daily duties of being an interior designer. I love the research part. Sourcing materials, coming up with the theme, the concept.
What is at the heart of your career in interior design that you want your clients to take home?
I want my clients to experience the space in a way that they feel inspired, motivated, energized, relaxed. A place that improves their quality of life.
