Jennifer Herwitt, Emmy Award-Winning Set Designer

What led you to start as a set decorator and when did you start your career as a set decorator?

I have always wanted to work in the film industry since I can remember. I went to Los Angeles on my own at the age of 16 and forged my career. I started in commercials: in the 80’s commercials were a booming industry. From there, I moved into music videos working with some of the world’s most popular artists, such as Madonna. I moved on to film before I went on to sitcoms like The Norm Show and then one-hour dramas! I have been truly blessed to work with some of the greatest directors, actors, and crews! Working on CSI Las Vegas was ideal. Grissom, played by William Peterson, was an entomologist! His office was fun for me to spread my wings with design, my love of insects, and cutting-edge technology that the world had not known before. Our show not only changed the face of television and state of the art technology: it helped forge the path for forensic technology.

What is your favorite aspect of your career as a set decorator?

Getting the opportunity to create a silent character—who that person is, how they live, what their life looks like. Working with the actors to help develop and create a real understanding of who their character is a rare privilege. How they think, what they are interested in, how they live—I get to experience and to create endless worlds and environments and to step into other people’s experiences.

What have you learned the most from your career as a set decorator?

I love to create environments for all walks of life: it’s fascinating to me. I feel honored to support the most talented Directors, DP’s, and work with the world’s best actors.

What are your favorite features of set decoration?

The art history: the different time periods and what and how they affected every aspect of how people lived during those times. That beyond all expectations, I was blessed to be nominated for 4 Emmys and actual won two! Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that for my life. I am truly humbled for being recognized. I am honored to be associated with that caliber of professionals for something I consider a labor of love!

What is at the heart of your career in set decoration that you want those who see your projects to take home?

How much detail and time goes into developing a set and a character.
