The two men were on furlough, the private said, and had chosen North Platte, Nebraska, as their destination to visit the bombardier’s grandparents, who lived a few miles outside of town.
Janey was cheerful and told the private about a dance at the auditorium that Saturday night and about the Sunday afternoon matinee at the Bijou while Elizabeth tended to the dishes in the nearby kitchen.
