"You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money

your goal. Instead pursue the things you love doing and then do them so well that

people can't take their eyes off of you." - Maya Angelou

Petra Hall is the owner of Petronella Hall, a company specializing in wallpaper,

fabric, cushions, and Bespoke products from the UK.

How did the idea for your business come about?

I was looking for an outlet for my illustration , I had printed some curtains when

working on my degree, and a friend suggested I look at producing interior fabrics with

my own designs on them--this led to wallpaper etc.

Can you describe for me your typical workday?

I don’t have a typical work day - there is so much to do. I have to create social media

posts every day, answer customer emails, order stock, and package up deliveries.

Some days, I research for new designs. Some days, I’m painting new designs. Some

days, I’m re-creating a vintage design for someone, visiting a trade show, or going out

to see a client.

What is your favorite aspect of being a business owner?

I get to do what I like when I like to a large degree. I can design for my own brand

whenever I feel like and work my own hours. I can work all night and have the next

day on the beach.

Knowing what you know now, what would you do differently with starting your

business?

I partnered with a friend in the beginning - that was a wrong decision: we should

have just supported each other.

How do you find employees who are as passionate about your business as you?

That’s really hard, no-one is as passionate - its not their brand. You just need to find

hard workers by trial and error, don’t take on friends as it can be very awkward.

What three pieces of advice would you offer to people who want to own

their own business?

Be brave, and just go for it! Push every door that opens for you even if its not quite

what you had in mind - it could lead somewhere exciting. Network as much as

possible, and don’t waste money on trade shows!

I have interviewed Petra concerning her business before for my blog, Monday,

Wednesday, Friday Finds. One of these interviews is also featured in the

bestselling book, the Being of Business: Interviews by Artists, Interior Designers, and

Foodies on Their Lives’ Work.

I have always found Petra interesting to interview and her business, Petronella

Hall, fascinating to follow because she is open to trying new things and remains

curious, and this is exhibited in her unique designs. After interviewing Petra this time,

I feel more inspired to try things in my own business endeavors and to remain curious

and to ask questions as I think this is what has led to her success. I also believe that

the fact that she loves her work is a huge factor in her success because it has

propelled her forward in her endeavors.

Lastly, I think the fact that Petra does what she loves helps her to be more

successful with her business. As Johnny Carsen said, "Never continue in a job you

don't enjoy. If you're happy in what you're doing, you'll like yourself, you'll have inner

peace. And if you have that, along with physical health, you will have had more

success than you could possibly have imagined." I believe that the more we are

interested in something, the more care we bring to it, and this care leads

us to great things, in business and in life.
