“I don’t eat—out,” Ms. Gershwin replied. “Why not?” I queried. “If you let someone buy your meal, they make you feel obligated to ‘em,” Ms. Gershwin replied.
“Where am I goin’?” the cabbie asked. “The Merry Ploughboys,” I replied, turning to Ms. Gershwin, I continued, “Listen Miss, I don’t know who has made you feel obligated, but I know that you fully deserve this supper: you are a brave one, and I just want to buy ye a meal before sending ye home. You will never owe me anything, all right?” I questioned as we pulled up to the pub and Ms. Gershwin nodded.
“What ‘ill ye have?” I asked Ms. Gershwin as our server approached our table. “A glass of water and some porridge, please,” Ms. Gershwin politely ordered. “Some meat and potatoes with a strong cuppa and a pot to go with it,” I ordered.
