Shelly Dozier-McKee of ConfettiStyle Interiors

What led you to become an interior designer, a design and DIY blogger, and a retail consultant?

As a young child, I had a passion for decorating, design and fashion. In addition, I have always been a creative person who loves to craft, to paint, and to make things by hand. My passion for fashion and design led me to study these disciplines in college, where I earned a BA degree in fashion merchandising with a minor in interior design.

After graduating from college, I started my retail career as an assistant buyer for a high-end department store in Seattle and from there moved on to Eddie Bauer where I advanced to the position of General Merchandise Manager for catalog and retail, overseeing men’s and women’s apparel, footwear and non-appeal product categories. During my tenure at Eddie Bauer, I was also fortunate to be involved in domestic and far-east product sourcing, and I traveled to Asia several times a year to work with factories on the production and manufacturing of exclusive products for the company. After 11 years at Eddie Bauer, my husband and I moved to Atlanta where I became the GMM for a national home decor and gift catalog. I left that position after 2 1/2 years to fulfill a life-long dream of opening my own home decor and gift store.

Within the first few years of business, The Scarlet Tassel was honored with several awards including an ASID Design Excellence Award in 2004, Top 50 National Retail Star award by Home Accents Today in 2005, an ARTS Award finalist nomination in 2005, Best of Atlanta award in 2006, and the Retail Excellence Award for Marketing Achievement by Gifts and Decorative Accessories in 2009. As part of my store portfolio, I also offered residential interior design and holiday decorating services, and I developed a series of seasonal design and lifestyle workshops to educate and to inspire customers on design, decorating, entertaining, and gifting.

What are your favorite aspects of being an interior designer, a design and DIY blogger, and a retail consultant?

While it might seem unusual, education is what I love most about my career as a designer, design blogger, and retail consultant. Yes, I love creating beautiful and functional spaces for clients; but also, I love educating people about design and helping them to discover and to connect with their personal design style.

I started my blog, ConfettiStyle, as a way to share, to educate, and to inspire people through my passion for design, entertaining, gifting, and living a stylish life. The blog is my platform to answer design questions, to help people tackle design challenges, and to inspire people to live their best life with style! My mom was a teacher for 27 years, and it was only a few years ago that I realized I had her love for educating and uplifting others, just in a different way.

What have you learned the most from your career in interior design, as a design and DIY blogger, and as a retail consultant?

I’ve learned many lessons throughout my career but none more important that this: surround yourself with people who have dreams, desires, ambition because they’ll help you push for and realize your own dreams, desires, and ambitions. I’m blessed to have had amazing mentors, business relationships, and friends who inspire & encourage me through their words, their actions, and by the way they live their lives and go after their dreams.

What are your favorite features of being an interior designer, a design and DIY blogger, and a retail consultant?

As an interior designer, I love the creative process of design—starting with a vision and seeing the vision come to life in a client’s home. As a blogger, nothing gives me more joy then to hear from readers how my advice and ideas have impacted their lives in a positive way. As a retail consultant, I love sharing both personal and business lessons that I’ve learned over the years and knowing that what I share can help someone with the success of their business.

What is at the heart of your career in interior design, in blogging, and in retail consultancy that you want your clients to take home?

Uplifting Others is at the heart of everything I do. Inspiring people to find and follow their passion; helping people to create beautiful homes that bring them joy; and encouraging people to live their joy.
