As they had dinner that first evening, Emma placed another parantha (buttered flatbread) on Sunil’s plate despite his entreaties. “Apake (your) plate is not a democracy, but a dictatorship, Sunil, and apa (you) are eating that parantha (buttered flatbread),” Emma declared. “Apa (you) are cruel,” Sunil replied in jest. “Haam (yes), maim (I) am,” Emma answered him with a laugh.
