The Voided Check: Part 1

Post by Onna Carr

“…Dashwood was born to an extraordinary fate. She was born to discover the falsehood of her own opinions, and to counteract, by her conduct, her most favourite maxims. She was born to . . . with no sentiment superior to strong esteem and lively friendship, voluntarily give her hand . . ..”

Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility.

One memory from my childhood shines forth more brightly than the rest of the lights illuminating my past as I cross the threshold of middle age, and from this recollection I continue to frame my views on loneliness, love, and happiness. The memory is of a framed, voided check, which hung above my parents’ bedroom window, where they could see it each morning upon waking and each evening before falling asleep. This is their story, the story of the voided check.
