Soon after Elinor and Mike’s third encounter, economic times in the city tightened with a large increase in population caused by an influx of immigration that drastically raised rent throughout the city. The rent increase led to more multi-family dwellings, shared apartment situations, and common-law marriages as people attempted to manage the rent. Elinor had invested her savings in retirement funds that could not be retrieved without stiff penalties, and she was indeed at a loss as to how she would manage an increase of thirty percent in lodging fees.
