“You shouldn’t be drinking that,” Elinor said with a nod toward the Irishman’s ale. “And ye shouldna be eatin’ fried chicken,” Mike replied. “Leave the chook alone,” my mother answered. “Then leave the ale alone. Dear God in heaven, is this what we have to look forward to? Saints preserve us,” Mike exclaimed. However, he fell silent as he saw the fear in Elinor’s eyes. “I ain’t a drunk, Miss, whatever other faults I got. I only have a pint at a time—always have. If ye ever find me out of sorts, ye can throw me out and . . . and divorce me,” Mike concluded with a grin as Elinor managed a feeble smile.
