During the winter holidays the first year of their marriage, Mike went to the apartment early one afternoon to clean up from a job, and he found Elinor there. “Ye are early,” Mike greeted Elinor, hanging his coat on an obliginghook. “Holidays,” Elinor replied. “So, are ye headin’ to Australia?” Mike questioned. “No,” Elinor answered. “But ye is from there,” Mike persisted. “My father was a drunkard, and my mother had to raise me alone. She lives in Brisbane, and I travel to see her on New Year’s,” Elinor declared. “Which is why ye were scared when I had a pint,” Mike said gently.
