“Is that why ye never married, current situation not withstandin’?” Mike queried Elinor. “Who would choose an ill-humored wife?” Elinor questioned. “I’ve seen ye with children, and I would have thought ye might want some yourself, or that if ye can make yourself agreeable to bairns, ye might to the right fella—if ye were inclined to,” Mike replied. “The children I tend love me because I understand them and because I try to ease their fears and carry their burdens with them—because I take part in their lives. We do not call each other’s bluffs in that moment, in that sphere because the bluffs have already been called,” Elinor stated.
