The Voided Check: Part 3
Post by Onna Carr
One day, Elinor had returned to her desk after running an errand to find Mike balancing a ladder in one arm and thumbing through her copy of Donne’s poems, which she had left out upon her desk after her lunch break, with his free hand. “Pardon, Ma’am. I was just a thumbin’ through. ‘No man is an island,’ ye know,” Mike concluded with a twinkle in his eyes as he looked up at Elinor, who was taken aback by his cavalier attitude. “No. ‘No man is an island.’ However, some are proverbial swamps,” Elinor replied. “Are ye refferin’ to me, or to humanity overall, Ma’am?” Mike questioned in a more serious tone. “At the moment I am referring to you. Please put my copy of Donne down,” Elinor clarified. “I ain’t a swamp, Miss,” Mike said in answer, shifting his ladder about and laying Donne back upon the desk and heading down the hall.
