Mike took Elinor to the park late one afternoon soon after their mutual settlement on love and marriage in a small church. He led her down one of its less traveled paths. “Listen,” he said as he walked beside her and the leaves crunched beneath their feet. “The sound of someone beside me on the path,” my mother replied as she slipped her hand into Mike O’Grady’s, and they found their way home in the gathering darkness, their searching having ended.
