That Michaelmas, Mike attended a party at the skyscraper Elinor worked at. He went out on the balcony as it neared ten, and he found the Donne Secretary quite undone in a coughing fit as she clung white-knuckled to the railing. He stepped back inside upon seeing her predicament, and he ordered a hot tea with blackberry brandy, which he took back out to the secretary and handed to her. “I don’t need . . . assistance,” Elinor gasped between coughs as she refused to take the tea. “Please drink it, Miss. It’s tea with a bit of brandy—no more than is in cough syrup. It ‘ill help stop ye fit. We’re all needy people—it’s part of the fate of bein’ a member of the human race. Ye might as well come to terms with it now rather than later,” Mike concluded as the secretary reluctantly took and sipped the brew.
